A genetic algorithm (GA) is a population-based search method inspired by natural selection. It evolves a set of candidate solutions over generations using selection, crossover and mutation, and needs only the ability to evaluate a solution, not gradients. This makes GAs useful for non-convex, discontinuous or combinatorial problems where calculus-based optimisers struggle.
